A warrior of battles in Thu Dau Mot homeland

70 years ago, the Southern Region Army Committee opened a new battle field named “Organization of youths” in Chau Thanh (now Thu Dau Mot City). Men and ladies in the twenties would never forget their days before the dawn. Mot Huu is retelling the stories through time Staying in his old house in Dinh Hoa Ward of Thu Dau Mot City, the old soldier Nguyen Van Huu (allias: Mot Huu, born in 1931) was yearning back to the glorious years. He was formerly Secretary of Chau Thanh District Party Committee. By the end of 1943, Mot Huu and many other youths in Dinh Hoa listened to Mr. Nguyen Duc Thuan – the then member of Southern Region Army Committee telling stories of imprisoned Party members. The hatred was blown up, prompting them to join the force. In the first day of his participation, Mot Huu was assigned to write banners for Viet Minh fronts. After nearly 2 years, the Tuong Binh Hiep-homed young man was dispatched to attend political training course in September 1945 to be qualified for liasion position. He became a delivery man in the battle field of Chau Thanh to link up with general commanding units. Plenty of times, he had to swallow up the documents and hid himself in the river. In 1947, the elite Nguyen Van Huu was seconded to a secret combat training course before being admitted to the 60-member Nguyen Hue squad confronting the enemies. With only 3 guns, his squad terrorized the enemies by long day guerilla strategies. “They have plenty of guns, we have mines and pitches,” said Mot Huu. In 1952, Mot Huu was assigned as a spy before being transferred to Phu Chanh Party Cell. Two years later, he was assigned to new position in office of Chau Thanh District Part y Committee. As part of the compaign sticking to localities and the people, in 1958, the party organization of Chau Thanh District Committee was splitted up to smaller and spreading units. During this time, Mot Huu was assigned with scouting tasks to record military and political moves of the enemies. After many failed raids in 1060-1961, the enemies flunged their fist at D War-base and neighboring regions so as to break the resistance line in Southern Region. In 1961, the combating force of Thu Dau Mot Province removed from D War-base to Chanh Phu Hoa Commune for new combat returns. From the very first days, the army under Nguyen Van Huu command has marched to Lai Thieu to partially eliminate the enemies. In the first compaign, Chau Thanh unit made an ambush on weapon transporation unit of the US Army and the puppet government, winning 17 guns and other army equipment. Following up was another victory at Ben Cui Station, winning 12 guns. In 1964, Nguyen Van Huu was transferred to position of Commander-in-chief of Thu Dau Mot Province Armed Force to be prepared for the general uprising of Mau Than Tet Holiday in 1968. It was remarkable for him to attend the military training course at Nguyen Ai Quoc Party School before being assigned as Secretary of Chau Thanh District Party Committee. By the end of 1972 and beginning of 1973 the US Army poured down tons of bombs on to Ha Noi and the neighboring provinces and cities. “During the time the enemies were bombing the capital city and other localities, we organized ambushes to distract them in the Southern Region for many days. The victory of aerial Dien Bien Phu was our pride of unity,” said Mot Huu with his eyes sparkling. The war was over leaving only 72 survived out of 4,000 soldiers participated. Thus, Mot Huu was still working on his paths to recover the remains of his comrades. Recorded by Dinh Thang through the telling of Mot Huu – Translated by Vi Bao
