The number of dengue fever cases recorded in Hanoi in 2023 were twice as high than in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ministry of Health has said.

According to statistics compiled by the Ministry, the country recorded a total of 172,000 cases of dengue fever, with 43 deaths last year, an annual decrease of 54%.

Although the number of dengue fever cases nationwide last year endured a sharp fall compared to 2022, the epidemic developed in a complicated manner compared to other years.

Every year has typically seen dengue fever break out between October and December in the capital. However, this year, the number of cases has increased earlier than normal.

Hoang Minh Duc, deputy director of management and operations at the Preventive Health Department, said that Hanoi has become the country’s hotspot for dengue fever due to its high population density and rapid transmission rate.

The municipal Department of Health is therefore taking drastic measures aimed at fighting the virus, calling on residents to protect themselves and visit healthcare centres if they show any symptoms of the disease.
