Part 7: Anticraft fire lines

Part 1: Long Nguyen - a testing target of B52 Part 2: To the tiger lair Part 3: Evil intention: Bringing the North back to the stone age Part 4: Bach Mai Hospital and 4 times hit by bombs Part 5: The spirit of Kham Thien Part 6: Pains become power 193 B52 stratofortresses and nearly 1,000 strategic bombers had been mobilized in only 12 days of winter 1972 in an ambition to destroy Ha Noi and northern provinces. To face such a force, the military forces and people in Ha Noi and neighboring provinces had built up a firm anticraft grid to destroy 34 B52 stratofortresses and many other strategic bombers. Meeting us in Ha Noi, Colonnel Dinh The Van, formerly Head of Artillery Battalion No. 77 of Regiment 257 in Division 361, informed that by arming our army with SAM II, the Soviet Union was totally awared of the destructive power of B52. P35 Radar was used to early detect targets heading for Ha Noi “During the time, the enemy announced to bring Ha Noi back to stone age in 3 days. Thus, we were all prepared from strategies to the spirit. In four days from December 18-21, we succeeded in eliminating 3 B52 stratofortresses from the sky. That was how protectors worked,” said Colonnel Dinh The Van. “We had two ways to strike B52 after recovering from jams. We hit at +3 degrees. If we strike at -3 degrees, the target should be on radar screen; however, in such way, we would be easily hit by Shrike. That was our weakness. In one squad of strategic bombing of the enemies, F-typed artillery depression aircrafts ussually came forth at about 15-30km. We had to wait for the F-typed to be out of Shrike range before initiating the radars when the B52 stratofortresses were near. We had to risk it to win,” said Colonnel Dinh The Van. As confirmed by Colonnel Nghiem Dinh Tich who was formerly head of P35 radar station, the enemies jamed our radars by plenty of sources with wide ranges of frequency. It was our guts to overcome the situation and stroke back at B52 stratofortresses. “We had to choose combat strategies because we need sustainable allocation to facilitate the weapons and humans using them. In one line of the aircrafts, we mobilized many battalion to stay forcused while distracting the enemies in other lines by faking the strike. In that way, they could not cover all the region. It was an art,” said Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Phiet, Commander of Battalion No. 59 of Regiment 261 of Division 361. “It was not easy to fight back. We had to work ahead with early launches of missles. My battalion No. 59 succeeded in bring down the first B52 stratofortress in Ha Noi by 3 shots,” said Duong Van Thuan, formerly commander of Battalion No. 59. Reported by H. Van – T.
