People’s Armed Force Hero Vo Thanh Long: A lifetime to people’s liberation cause

Vo Thanh Long was born in 1943 to Vinh Tan Commune of Tan Uyen District in wartime and attended revolutionary activities in June 1960 at his 17. After 6 months of training, he returned Chau Thanh. In 1963, he was promoted to commander of Scout Platoon. At that time, his uncle was a deputy and comrade to him. They made great cooperation to break up the enemy’s line and win battles, as retold by Mr. Vo Van Gio, his uncle. In 8 years of fighting, Mr. Vo Thanh Long has commanded his units to combat in 40 battles, eliminating 400 enemies, destroying 10 outposts, 4 tanks, 1 company, and 4 platoons. By vision of Mr. Vo Van Gio, we saw the images of a wise hero who made a marvelous victory in Phu Loi air-port battle. In 7 days scouting the air-port, he succeeded in drawing a map of the place making it easier to eliminate 40 enemies. Besides, he collected enemy’s weapons and ammos to create his own weapons. Mr. Vo Chi Cong, Vo Thanh Long's youngest brother, is now taking care of the altar worshiping the fallen hero In 1965, he attended another fierce battle of Phu Chanh outpost lasting from 8:00 to 6:00 of the next day when he was injured. Recovering from injuries, he continued to join in battles despite the transfer to Chau Thanh paper work unit. On the 3rd day of lunar January of Mau Than 1968, he was killed in action during an assault on Tan Phuoc Khanh Theatre. His devotion to the cause of people’s liberation was honored with 1st rank Medal of Revolution Hero, 1st and 2nd rank Medal of Resistance War, 3 times of emulation hero, etc. On November 6, 1968, he was honored with title of People’s Armed Force Hero.
